Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to shelve low-cost housing project

City Improvement Committee of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has approved civic body's proposal to shelve plans to construct another 5,396 flats under its housing project for economically weaker sections.

PCMC will wrap up this project after constructing 7,864 houses, a little more than half of it original plan of constructing 13,250 flats. This is due to various reasons including financial constraints.

There is shortage of land to construct additional houses. Also funding of project under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) will stop in March 2014.

In Phase I, PCMC has constructed 6,720 houses in sector 17-18 in Chikhali and work is in final stage.

In Phase II, PCMC will construct another 1,134 houses in Charholi and Dudulgaon.
